Shinshiro City and Tenkara Fishing
The Town Overflowing with History and Nature: Enjoy Traditional Japanese Fishing “Tenkara” in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced angler, we have content that everyone can enjoy.
With the recent resurgence in the popularity of fishing, Shinshiro City, abundant in nature, has seen an increase in stream fishing enthusiasts. There are various fishing methods like lure, fly, and bait fishing, and “Tenkara” fishing. To make these fishing methods easily accessible to everyone, we have opened a managed fishing area.
For those who find fishing in streams a bit challenging, our managed fishing areas offer an easy start, where you can learn and practice fishing.
This time, we have developed a product introducing “Tenkara,” the simplest yet profound traditional Japanese fishing method. Tenkara fishing, which involves using just a rod and a fly, invites you to hold a rod, venture into the mountains, find your spot, and experience the simple yet challenging art of fishing.
The provider of this fishing playground is the Middle Part of the Samukawa Fisheries Cooperative, which manages the stream fishing areas. “Shiose Base” is not only the name of the Samukawa Baba River Shiose District Area but also the name of the fishing organization cooperating with the Fisheries Cooperative to manage this area.
We hope that the cooperation with fishermen from Shiose will spread to the Samukawa and Samukawa Rivers.
As the name “Base” suggests, we also hope to make it a base for various activities, not only for stream fishing like fly fishing and Tenkara, but also for camping and mountain biking.
Opened in 2022, Shiose Base offers stream fishing with three methods: Tenkara, fly fishing, and lure. It is under the jurisdiction of the Middle Part of the Samukawa Fisheries Cooperative, covering an approximately 2.5 km section. The riverbank and embankments are well-maintained, making it a safe and enjoyable place for beginners. The area is also rich in trout, promising a good catch.
The Connection between Shiose Base and Tenkara
Shiose Base is an ideal area for Tenkara fishing. With well-maintained riverbanks and embankments, it’s a safe and enjoyable place for beginners. The area is rich in trout, promising a good catch. At Shiose Base, Tenkara fishing classes are also held, where you can learn the basics of Tenkara fishing and how to choose the right flies.
Shiose Base is highly recommended for those who want to start Tenkara or improve their Tenkara skills.
The Future of Shiose Base and Tenkara
As Shiose Base contributes to the popularization and development of Tenkara, it aims for further revitalization with the increasing number of Tenkara anglers.
Shiose Base and Tenkara play an important role in contributing to the development of sports culture in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture. We look forward to its continued growth.
Tenkara, a unique Japanese fishing method, is practiced at Shiose Base along with fly fishing and other techniques. It is especially enjoyed in combination with headwater fly fishing, with excellent catches expected in active spots.
Tenkara is a type of stream fishing using a hook made of feathers, known as “kebari,” to catch trout and char. The lightweight gear and natural approach of Tenkara are its distinctive features.
The basic method of Tenkara is to float the kebari on the water surface and let it drift
with the current. When the kebari drifts in front of the trout, they instinctively bite it.
Tenkara is a fishing method that is relatively easy for beginners to start. Moreover, it offers the charm of enjoying fishing while feeling close to nature.
River Base Shiose
River Base Shiose, located within the jurisdiction of the Middle Part of the Samukawa Fisheries Cooperative in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, is a new facility of Shiose Base started in 2022 and is a composite camping site. This facility achieved its crowdfunding goal and has ramped up operations. River Base Shiose has created an atmosphere of a managed fishing area by filling a pond with water.
It is a facility characterized not only by fishing and camping but also by offering various experiences for families.
In stream sports fishing, not only the technique of rod handling is required, but also outdoor experience is essential. Facilities like River Base Shiose, which offer managed fishing areas, provide an easy way for outdoor enthusiasts to get involved in sports fishing. The area is also popular among cyclists, making it a new spot in Shinshiro for “BIKE & FISHING.”
